Fox 29 News came down to the Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold, New Jersey last Monday to shoot their segment on "What Makes You Mad." The feature of that segment was Mall Parking. Melanie Alnwick, the Fox DC anchorwoman happened to find my article on mall parking and asked if I would do the interview and be willing to test out my theory.
As the two Fox reporters eagerly waited to test out my theory, I gave them a little mathematical background on how a person could find a convenient parking spot in a busy mall. Using some basic probability and statistics, I demonstrated how I developed this technique and implemented it on a regular basis. When we put the parking solution into practice that evening, I found myself amused by their startled reactions to the efficacy of the method.
To think that this all came about because of some reflection on the nature of mathematics and how to apply this field to everyday life. Interestingly, I got a call today from a Boston Herald reporter who inquired about the adaptation of the method to a more urban scene. Does this mean I will be known as some kind of parking guru?
If the exposure continues like this, who knows what's on the horizon for mathbyjoe? To see the piece, go to my homepage and click on the "As Seen on Fox TV" link.
